Our Review

Starting in 2007 as a small basement operation founded by two Georgetown University students, Frontpoint has grown over the years to become one of the leaders in home security systems that work with smart technology. Although it hasn’t been around as long as other home security companies in the industry, they’ve leaned into this by positioning themselves with a fresh take on an old model. Although the DIY setup may seem daunting, we were impressed by the sheer number of positive reviews with customers who were pleased by how easy and straightforward the process turned out to be. If they encountered issues, Frontpoint’s customer service team is known to be professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. Lastly, Frontpoint is upfront with their pricing structures, and customers can easily see all the prices and packages they have to offer instead of needing to call for a quote. We were impressed by the affordability of these packages and the fact that they provided monthly financing through Affirm to soften the equipment’s upfront costs.

Many customers found that installing the equipment themselves was straightforward and easy to do, even if they were inexperienced with the installation. They like that the instructions are easy to understand with step by step instructions.

A feature that customers especially like is the immediate integration with their smartphones. They also found that if they needed help during installation, the customer service representatives were professional, courteous, and knowledgeable to resolve their issues or questions quickly.

Placeholder text…Over the years, I’ve had affiliations with many top-drawer security companies. I must say that Frontpoint is the best company that I’ve used. I am an right-hand amputee and was worried that installing the system myself might prove difficult, but it was surprisingly easy. The online and hard copy materials provided hold your hand and guide you through the process. The few times that I had questions that needed human support, their personnel were accessible, knowledgeable, patient and professional (in a friendly manner). I use both the key fob and phone app to control the system, and find them both easy to use. This is in no way a knock against some other firms that I’ve used, I’m just stating that this company serves my purposes better.

Frontpoint was the first home security provider that was responsive. They weren’t pushy and are straight-up friendly guys. They were informative and told me everything I needed to know, so I didn’t really have a lot of questions. Installation was the cool part. It was easy, and what was excellent was that I didn’t have to have an installer come out. I like the cell phone part of their service, too. I can take the system with me. Overall, I’m a satisfied customer and I have recommended them. I’m impressed with a lot of things.

Pros
  • DIY installation is hassle-free and straightforward
Cons
  • Some customers found issues setting up and getting motion detectors to work

Company Background

Frontpoint was founded in 2007 by Chris Villar and Aaron Shumaker. Both students at Georgetown University, their first office was in Shumaker’s uncle’s basement. In only a couple of weeks, they went from no customers to 200 customers in their local area. Because there were already a variety of home security companies at the time, they wanted to shake up the business model and differentiate themselves by focusing on adopting new technologies and self-installation.

They also knew that they wanted customer service to be a strong point to differentiate themselves further. Villar and Shumaker also recognized that DIY installation would necessitate extra support. By the end of 2021, the company’s goal is to grow to a million customers and become a leader in “security from a smartphone.”

Pros
  • Focus on customer experience and smartphone integration from the very beginning
Cons
  • Company has not been around as long as comparable companies in the industry

The Bottom Line

Frontpoint is a refreshingly new take in the home security market. You can tell that the founders looked at what’s working and what’s not working on the market today and worked to rectify the issues they found.

For instance, customers no longer have to wait for an installation tech to come to their homes to install the equipment. The equipment is shipped free to customers, and with easy step by step instructions, they can have their new security system running the same day.

However, this focus on DIY installation and smart technology doesn’t mean that the company is leaving customers in the dust. Their focus on customer experience from the beginning shows in the glowing reviews from customers around the country. Frontpoint customers are impressed by the friendliness and professionalism of their representatives.
